After hand-making soba with local residents, the afternoon unfolds flexibly according to the day’s mood and pace, with time in peaceful lakeside settings such as northern Lake Biwa or Lake Yogo. Rather than fixed sightseeing or food-focused activities alone, the experience emphasizes human connection and the gentle rhythms of everyday rural life.

Ikehara is a secluded rural hamlet near Kinomoto, tucked away between Lake Yogo and the northern mountains. Shaped over generations by agriculture, water, and local faith, the village remains closely tied to its surrounding landscape and way of life.

Here, buckwheat is cultivated as part of a community-led effort to sustain local traditions and rural livelihoods. The harvest is stone-milled into fresh soba flour and prepared at a small village soba dojo run by local residents. More than a place to enjoy soba, the dojo serves as a gathering place for the community, where visitors are welcomed into everyday village life.

Through cooking, conversation, and shared meals, visitors are invited to experience the warmth of a close-knit community and the everyday rhythms of rural life that have been passed down through generations.

After meeting your guide at JR Maibara Station, travel together by local train to Kinomoto. From there, continue by car into the surrounding countryside to reach a quiet rural village.

Here, you join local residents to prepare hand-made soba, from mixing and kneading the dough to cutting and cooking the noodles. This is not a formal cooking class, but a shared activity done together at a relaxed pace.

The soba is then enjoyed as a meal, accompanied by conversation that offers insight into everyday life, seasonal rhythms, and community ties in the village.
