Cycling the Nakasendo: Two Post Towns of Water & History

This tour suits travelers who enjoy gentle cycling and cultural exploration, and who are curious about everyday life along historic routes beyond famous landmarks. It is ideal for those seeking a calm, landscape-based introduction to rural Japan. No advanced cycling experience is required, but participants should be comfortable riding a bicycle.

The Nakasendo was one of the main inland highways connecting Kyoto and Edo during the early modern period.

Rather than following the coast, it passed through mountains, farmland, and post towns that sustained travel with food, lodging, and water. Around northern Lake Biwa, the route crossed landscapes long shaped by agriculture and natural springs.

Compared with well-known post towns such as Magome and Tsumago, this area remains understated, with a preserved atmosphere and very few visitors.

After meeting at JR Maibara Station, you begin the journey by e-bike, riding along quiet local roads toward Samegai. Samegai is known for its clear spring water, which runs through the town and has supported both travelers and residents for centuries. Walking through the streets, you see how water, housing, and daily life are closely connected in this former post town.

Lunch features the area’s specialty, freshwater trout (nijimasu), served at a long-established traditional restaurant said to have welcomed traveling samurai in earlier times.

In the afternoon, continue cycling toward Kashiwabara, passing through open farmland and gentle countryside.

Kashiwabara retains the atmosphere of a historic post town while remaining a place where people still live and work. You walk through the streets, take a break with tea and light sweets, and experience the slower rhythm that defined travel along the Nakasendo

The tour concludes at JR Kashiwabara Station, where the e-bike is returned. From there, it is easy to return to Maibara by local train.
