Your journey begins at JR Maibara Station, where you’ll meet your local guide and drive along the lakeshore to Nagahama Port. From there, a 30-minute ferry ride takes you across the calm waters of Lake Biwa to Chikubushima—an island long shrouded in legend and sacred meaning.
This small, forested island has been a center of pilgrimage since ancient times. Revered as the dwelling place of Benzaiten, goddess of water, music, and prosperity, it holds deep spiritual significance for followers of both Shinto and Buddhism. Chikubushima is home to Tsukubusuma Shrine and Hogonji Temple, standing side by side as a rare example of Japan’s syncretic religious traditions.
Once ashore, you’ll ascend 155 stone steps to the top of the island. Though steep, the path winds through dense trees and offers a serene transition into sacred space. At the summit, panoramic views open out over Lake Biwa, and you’ll find centuries-old architecture and ornate temple halls nestled in nature.
Depending on the season, the island transforms in color—surrounded by cherry blossoms in spring or framed by fiery foliage in autumn. The sense of timeless reverence, shaped by both nature and belief, is palpable in every corner.
After returning by boat to Nagahama, you’ll enjoy time to explore the charming castle town in the Kurokabe Square district, known for its historic buildings, glass workshops, and a variety of local eateries (vegan/vegetarian options available).
The tour concludes at JR Maibara Station, where your guide will assist with directions or onward travel.
