Hikone developed as a strategic castle town following Tokugawa victory at the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. Governed by the Ii clan for over 250 years, the town combined military defense with administrative order and cultural refinement. Its street layout—angled, narrow, and deliberately confusing—was designed to protect the castle while organizing samurai, artisan, and merchant districts according to status and function.

Today, Hikone remains one of Japan’s best-preserved castle towns. Its castle is one of only a small number of surviving original keeps in Japan and is designated a National Treasure alongside Himeji. Within the modern townscape, traces of the Edo-period castle town still overlap with everyday life—most clearly in the street structure itself, where defensive planning and social hierarchy continue to shape how the town is experienced today.

After meeting at JR Maibara Station, travel by Ohmi Railway to Hikone. From the historic edge of the castle town, begin walking through streets once shaped for defense, with angled lanes and layered districts.

Continue through neighborhoods where samurai, artisans, and merchants once lived. Visit preserved ashigaru residences that show the modest domestic reality of lower-ranking warriors. These areas remain quiet residential streets, offering a sense of continuity between past and present community life.

Lunch is taken within Hikone’s castle town, where numerous local eateries line the historic streets. Options range from ramen, udon, and sushi to Omi beef and yoshoku (Japanese-style Western dishes). Together with your guide, you choose a restaurant on the day based on your preference. Lunch cost is not included.

Ascend the small hill to Hikone Castle, a walk of approximately 15 minutes, and explore its grounds and National Treasure keep. Dating back more than 450 years, the castle complex preserves its original stone walls, gates, and defensive layout.

Climbing toward the keep involves traditional stone steps and, inside, steep wooden staircases that reflect the structure’s defensive character. Though modest in scale, the castle contains many distinctive features best appreciated while exploring with your guide.

After descending, visit Genkyuen Garden and enjoy a bowl of matcha in a traditional tea room. Designed as a feudal lord’s strolling garden, it reflects the cultural refinement cultivated alongside castle life. This quiet matcha moment offers a gentle close to the experience.

Afterward, you may finish at Hikone Castle or walk with your guide to Hikone Station (approx. 10 minutes) for return to JR Maibara Station.
