About Nagahama and Its Castle-Town Heritage
Nagahama is a compact lakeside town where history remains part of everyday life. It was first developed as a castle town by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a samurai leader who rose from humble origins to become one of the central figures in the unification of Japan in the late 16th century. The town later prospered through trade along Lake Biwa and the Hokkoku Kaido. Today, visitors can explore its story through a lakeside castle, a beautiful historic garden, old merchant streets, temples, and unexpected details such as walls made from former wooden boats.
At the heart of the town is the Kurokabe district, where traditional buildings have been brought back to life as glass studios, shops, galleries, and cafés. Together with the colorful culture of the Nagahama Hikiyama Festival, this mix of history, creativity, and local life makes Nagahama an enjoyable town to discover on foot.
