About the Backroads of Northern Lake Biwa
The countryside around northern Lake Biwa is shaped by rice fields, irrigation channels, and small settlements closely tied to the land. For generations, people here have lived in rhythm with seasonal change, cultivating fields, maintaining waterways, and using local roads that connect villages rather than cities. These backroads reveal a quieter side of the region—where nature, work, and daily routines remain closely linked.
The Experience
Cycling through Fields, Villages, and Lakeside Paths
After meeting at JR Maibara Station, the tour begins with a guided ride on well-maintained mountain bikes. (E-bikes are available for those who prefer additional assistance.)
The route covers approximately 15 km, passing through rice fields, agricultural land, and small rural communities. Along the way, short stops and brief walks provide time to observe temples, shrines, waterways, and seasonal scenery.
The pace is steady and unhurried, with frequent breaks to take in the surroundings and learn how people continue to live and work in this landscape today. The tour concludes with a return to JR Maibara Station.

- Seasonal operation: March to mid-December (excluding mid-July to mid-September due to heat)
- Operates as a half-day tour, starting at 9:00 am or 1:00 pm
- Meeting point & end point: JR Maibara Station
- Suitable for ages 13 and up; minimum height 152 cm (5 ft)
- E-bikes available for an additional fee (¥2,500 per bike)
Weather & Insurance
- The tour operates in light rain; in case of heavy rain, it may be canceled.
- Participants should be able to ride a bicycle safely; the route may be adjusted for safety
- Comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for cycling and light walking are recommended
- Guests are advised to arrange full travel insurance independently
